The Story of… our Chelsea Terraced Apartment

The JLE Studio design team looks at this clever and compact apartment

The Brief

The brief for the JLE Studio team was to transform a tired and jaded apartment on the second and third floors of a house within a conservation area. The clients wanted a streamlined and contemporary living space that would complement the new terrace that was planned to the rear of the property.

The Starting Point

Once appointed, the JLE Studio team had the task of obtaining planning approval  for the new roof terrace from the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. The potential of adding a roof terrace was pivotal to the client’s acquisition of the apartment. The inclusion of a new and easily accessible outside space would have a significant effect on how the new layout, over two floors, would work successfully.

The Details

On seeing the original layout, our team had to visualise and plan a complete refurbishment that would change a tired terraced property into a modern, easy-to-live-in home. Bespoke fitted furniture was meticulously designed to fulfil all storage requirements.

The Design Process

The design process included reworking both bathrooms in the apartment. The new layouts make better use of space whilst adding a very specific sense of luxury. There is ample storage throughout, the kitchen has a clever bi-fold breakfast cupboard and open shelves. Bespoke fitted joinery in the bedroom accommodates the angled window wall whilst looking very sleek and simple.

The End Result

The apartment is a striking example of how a modest space can be reworked to fulfil all contemporary living requirements. There are colour and texture themes throughout which provide a sense of continuity, and the client’s colourful artworks stand out dramatically against these pale and neutral shades. Each room is perfectly proportioned with architectural details and finishing touches that reflect the age and style of the original house.
